A privately-owned addictions treatment centre that ran straight into a wall of opposition in central Newfoundland has found a new home on the island's west coast.

Serenity on the Rock had tried to open a facility in Northern Arm, but its plans to remodel an existing property met with firm opposition by residents.

The town council also refused to rezone the land where the organization wanted to set up shop.

But co-owner Sherri Skeans said that Serenity's plans wound up working out, and that the controversy in Northern Arm over the last few months actually worked in their favour.

"After all the publicity in Northern Arm, communities came forward to not only offer their support but also offer locations," she said.

Serenity on the Rock on Monday officially opened its new location at Glenburnie, near Woody Point, in Gros Morne National Park.

"We're actually grateful for Northern Arm and what they were exposing us to, because in the end it brought us something even better," she said.

Apart from offering programs to treat addictions, Serenity is also promoting itself as a health retreat "for anyone who wants to be away alcohol and drugs and promote a health and wellness lifestyle."
