Leo Crockwell's brother says he's not sure how the family will react once Leo is once again a free man after completing his four-year sentence.

Crockwell was at the centre of the infamous stand-off with the RCMP at the family's home in Bay Bulls, where he lived with his mother and sister.

The sentencing came down on Friday afternoon. With time served, Leo Crockwell has about 22 months remaining.

Bill Crockwell said his brother is fortunate that he received a provincial sentence, avoiding a transfer outside the province.

"Fortunately, he's in the province and I think that at least there's some family support that can be given there, which wouldn't be available if he had to go outside the province," Crockwell said.

He said that the family is not sure what will happen with Leo Crockwell finishes his sentence.

"The family's going to receive him back as well as it can, of course, and that will depend on the relationship at that point," he said.

Bill Crockwell said the family will deal with the situation when it comes.

"I'm sure, too, along with everything else, the family is going to try to do the best they can. Some parts of the family are going to, of course, obviously [be] impacted by all this, so we’ll just have to see where that ends up at that point."

Leo Crockwell will be on probation for three years once he finishes his time in custody.
