Less money and fewer members put Kiwanis music festival in doubt, say organizers.
The St. John's Kiwanis music festival begins its 61st season on Sunday, but its future is in doubt due to fewer donors and members supporting the event.
Charlie Pope, Kiwanis festival president, told CBC News the groups' members are growing older.
"The aging factor is a factor in Kiwanis and affecting us just like it does every other part of the province," said Pope.
"Over the past number of years we've had some people who have passed away who have been very generous to Kiwanis," added Pope.
Running the two week festival costs approximately $150,000.
"It's getting harder to replace the generous donors of the past," said Pope.
The number of students participating in the festival has declined to about 4000, down from 10,000 in the 1960s when more school bands and choirs participated.
The Stephenville Rotary Club announced in late 2012 it wouldn't go ahead with its music festival due to a lack of volunteers.
