The number of people charged with driving while impaired took a big jump in Labrador West in 2012, according to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary.

Forty-eight people were arrested for operating a motor vehicle while impaired in 2012. There were 38 in 2011.

Insp. Paula Walsh, who heads the RNC's Labrador West detachment, said the trend is worrying.

"It is a concern and we do expect that we will see an increase in this for this coming year," Walsh told CBC News.

Five charges of impaired driving have already been laid in 2013, according to the RNC.

Members of the public can assist the police by calling 911 if they suspect someone is driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, said Walsh.
