Power was restored Thursday to residents of two communities on Newfoundland's Northern Peninsula, where fierce winter weather took out electrical supplies.

Port Saunders and Hawke's Bay, N.L.Power was knocked out in Hawke's Bay.

Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro said salt on transmission lines overnight caused outages in Port Saunders and Hawke's Bay.

"We turned on the backup diesel generation because the transmission line is tripping and we were able to provide power overnight to those customers," said Hydro communications official Merissa King.

"Now this morning there [appeared to have been] a trip in the diesel backup plant."

Hydro was able to restore power in the communities around 11 a.m., although the Crown corporation warned that there may still be flickering because of salt on the lines.

Power had been restored hours earlier to most of the customers who lost electricity for about two days.

Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro apologized to customers for the outages.

Gerald Hiller, the mayor of St. Lunaire-Griquet, said residents of his town "know how to ride out a storm," although he said the loss of water and electricity posed problems.

He said the town will be looking into the purchase of an emergency generator for its pumphouse.
