High winds prompted Marine Atlantic to cancel ferry crossings on Monday, as a stormy system swept into much of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Crown corporation had already cancelled crossings that had been set for late Sunday, forcing travellers and truckers to wait until conditions improved.

Winds on the Newfoundland side of the Cabot Strait hit 110 kilometres on Sunday. Environment Canada maintained a snow squall warning for Port aux Basques and the surrounding area.

The storm also kept four provincial ferries that serve southern Newfoundland to stay in port.

Meteorologists issued weather warnings for much of the province, with separate advisories involving snow, rain and high winds. Blizzard warnings were issued in Labrador.

Schools in Labrador and on Newfoundland's Burin Peninsula closed amid the stormy weather.

On the Strait of Belle Isle service, the Sir Robert Bond ferry was holding in Corner Brook.
