Exploration in Corner Brook's watershed not approved yet

Corner Brook Mayor Neville Greeley has a message for opponents of a proposed mineral exploration program in the city's watershed area - they would be mistaken to think council is going to approve it just yet.
However, Greeley said that under the current watershed management plan, an application put forth by Thomas Resources to drill 21 holes in the rock could be permitted.
According to the application, the work would be conducted eight kilometres away from the water intake for the treatment plant.
The area that would be explored is also a kilometre away from the lake.
Greeley said now that the public consultation period is over, the watershed management committee has to review the plan and make a recommendation to council.
"What the situation that the council has got before it now is, can these 21 holes be drilled without causing any impact to the city's water supply?" Greeley He added that even if the exploration work is approved, the company has been told that there is no guarantee a quarry would be given the green light.
