Liberal MHA Yvonne Jones says she's disappointed the premier didn't appoint a woman to the C-NLOPB. (CBC)Liberal MHA Yvonne Jones says too many qualified women are being passed over in favour of patronage appointments to key jobs in the province, citing Ross Reid's new position heading the population growth strategy.
She also mentioned the naming of Scott Tessier as chair and Ed Williams as vice-chair of the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board.
Williams was an advisor to Premier Kathy Dunderdale and is also the brother of former premier Danny Williams.
Jones said it flies in the face of Dunderdale's recent celebration of women and their accomplishments in the province.
"I'm disappointed, actually, that the premier didn't put a woman there," she said.
"She held this big celebration last week ... but at the same time she was laying women off in the public service, and now she's appointing Tory supporters to these positions without giving women full consideration on boards like this."
Jones did acknowledge that appointments to the C-NLOPB are a joint decision between the province and Ottawa.
However, she said that there is no evidence that Dunderdale recommended any women for the board, which is made up of six men.
