People in the St. John's area are digging out from Tuesday's dump of 22 cm of snow, that was whipped around by winds overnight.

"Gotta love this lighter stuff," said Paul Stryde, while shovelling his St. John's driveway. "In St. John's, it's usually rain events following snow events, and this is a better one."

Roads, however, remained slippery with ice under the layer of snow.

Paul Mackey, the director of public works for the city of St. John's, said the temperature dropped overnight, so salt is less effective.

"Perhaps later today now, as it warms up slightly, it'll get down to the bare pavement on some of the major thoroughfares," said Mackey.

"But I think the temperatures are down for the next several days, so you want to be aware the salt is not as effective under those conditions," he said.

Most Eastern District schools outside the St. John's area have closed this morning because of road conditions.

Environment Canada has put most of the island on snow squall watches or warnings this morning. In western Labrador, wind chill warnings have been put in effect, so primary school students have been told to stay home.
