Nelson Hart, who is awaiting a new murder trial on the 2002 drowning deaths of his twin daughters, has hired a new lawyer.

Prominent St. John's lawyer Jeff Brace appeared on Hart's behalf at the Newfoundland and Labrador Court of Appeal on Tuesday.

The Court of Appeal last September ordered a new trial for Hart, whom a jury convicted of murder in 2007. Hart was given an automatic life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years.

The Crown is appealing that decision to the Supreme Court of Canada.

Brace said he will also apply to represent Hart at the top court.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Court of Appeal ruled last fall that Hart ought to have been allowed to testify at his trial in private, and in a separate decision ruled that some of the evidence obtained through a so-called "Mr. Big" sting had breached his Charter rights.

The jury was shown video of Hart meeting with an undercover RCMP officer, whom Hart believed was a prominent crime figure.

Hart was convicted of killing his daughters Krista and Karen, who were three years old when they drowned at Gander Lake, in central Newfoundland.
