A man who was wrongfully convicted for the murder of his mother more than 20 years ago was stabbed repeatedly in St. John's early Sunday morning, after he tried to break up a fight.

A source told CBC News that Gregory Parsons — one of the subjects of the Lamer inquiry into wrongful convictions in Newfoundland and Labrador's justice system — was stabbed at least six times after he tried to break up an argument between a man and a woman downtown.

On Sunday, the RNC said two men were injured after the incident, near Water and Adelaide streets. No charges have been laid.

A source told CBC News that Parsons does not remember what happened after he began wrestling with the man.

Parsons' wife cut her hand when she took the knife from the man he was fighting with.

Parsons, who was exonerated after a conviction for the 1991 stabbing death of his mother, Catherine Carroll, is now resting at home. In 2002, his friend Brian Doyle pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the case.
