Teen convicted of beating disabled man awaits sentence

A Crown lawyer is calling for a sentence of more than a year for a young woman convicted of brutally beating and robbing a disabled man near St. John's last September.
The Crown wants the woman to serve 12 to 15 months in custody while the defence has requested she be sentenced to six to nine months' house arrest.
The young woman pleaded guilty of conspiring to lure a disabled man, 24, away from Mount Pearl Square, and then taking part in savagely beating and robbing him in a nearby wooded area.
She was one of a group of five teenagers charged after the incident Sept. 28, 2012.
There is a court-ordered ban on identifying her because she was under the age of 18 when the crimes happened.
The young woman wiped away tears throughout her hearing in St. John's provincial court on Friday morning.
During breaks, she spoke with her mother and other family members who were there to support her.
Disabled man savagely beaten and robbed
Days after she was arrested, Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Chief Bob Johnston said he felt compelled to speak out and publicly condemn it.
"Suffice it to say that this individual was one of our vulnerable people in our community and we all have an obligation to do what we can to make sure that they are safe," said Johnston last October.
On Friday, the court saw a text message she sent after the attack .
In it she wrote, "I broke his nose and split open his face. Ha, ha.. I f**ked him up."
Lawyers submit sentencing recommendations
Her lawyer entered evidence suggesting that the girl knew what she did was wrong. Originally, she denied her role in the attack.
The young woman could be heard sobbing as she was led out of court this morning
Judge Pamela Goulding will hand down her decision later in January.
