Bedbugs, their eggs and bedbug feces were found in several areas of provincial court in St. John's over the weekend.

Chief judge Mark Pike said evidence of bedbugs was found in an interview room used by legal aid lawyers at the court complex on the fourth floor of Atlantic Place, on Water Street.

The bugs were also found in waiting rooms for witnesses outside some courtrooms, and in some baseboards.

Bedbugs are tiny parasites that feed on blood, often unnoticed, and cause rashes. They are notorious for being difficult to eradicate.

Pike said all areas of the courts and the rest of the floor of Atlantic Place have been inspected, steamed and vacuumed.

He also says regular inspection and treatment involving a search dog will continue this week, as needed.

A single bedbug had been found at the court in October, with another discovery made last week. On the second occasion, a Crown prosecutor initially refused to report for work.

Pike said the bugs are no reason for anyone to stay home.
