A section of road in the west end of St. John's was shut down Thursday night after an ambulance collided with an SUV.

The accident happened at a busy intersection on Topsail Road.

The ambulance — with two paramedics on board — T-boned the SUV, which was driven into a fence by the impact.

The woman driving the SUV had to be cut out of her vehicle.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said both vehicles sustained extensive damage, but injuries were reported to be non life-threatening.

The eastbound lanes of Topsail Road between Forbes Street and Columbus Drive were closed for several hours while the investigation took place.
