A proposed addiction and alcoholism treatment centre in the central Newfoundland community of Northern Arm is facing resistance from residents.

In order for Serenity on the Rock to open its doors, the town council must first approve a rezoning request.

However, when council held a public meeting on Monday night, about 70 people showed up — most of them to voice their opposition to the treatment centre.

"It's terrifying," said Northern Arm resident Nadine Stuckless who lives next door to the proposed centre.

"I'm sorry, not against addictions treatments because I have family myself that should be there, but it's definitely the wrong location."

Ben Newman moved to the community very recently following his retirement.

"I just don't want them in my backyard," Newman said. "I'm sorry, I just don't."

Co-owner of Serenity on the Rock, Sherri Skeans, agreed to talk with CBC after the meeting. However, she left before commenting.

The town council could make a decision about the rezoning application as early as its next council meeting Dec.18.
