Crews with Newfoundland Power were battling icy weather conditions Friday to restore power to homes and businesses that lost service during a stormy night.
Almost 11,000 customers on the northeast Avalon Peninsula alone had lost power on Thursday night, as high winds and heavy snow combined to take down a string of feeders in the transmission network.
Power was restored quickly for many customers, but service was still out on Friday morning in a few neighbourhoods in St. John's and in Paradise.
Power was also out in several other areas of the province, including Musgrave Harbour, Trinity and Change Islands.
Newfoundland Power cited severe weather conditions and damages to overhead lines in the outages.
Service was expected to be restored at different stages of Friday morning.
Power was briefly severed at St. John's International Airport, and affected service. Some passengers had to deplane on the tarmac and walk through high winds to the terminal.
In central St. John's, a car caught fire shortly after 11:30 Thursday night when a live power line fell on it.
