The SPCA in Happy Valley-Goose Bay is under quarantine because of an outbreak of canine parvo-virus, a deadly illness that makes animals sick very quickly.

Spokesperson Bonnie Learning said three puppies at the shelter had to be euthanized.

"It had gone through them so fast," Learning said. "One literally had to be put down within an hour because he was just so sick."

Although the quarantine will be lifted Saturday, Learning said the shelter won't be open to the public until Monday.

The virus can be prevented by a vaccine.
