A man involved in some high-profile court cases in St. John's will spend another night in jail as he awaits a bail hearing in western Newfoundland.

Jeffrey Donald Heale, 32, appeared in Corner Brook provincial court Monday morning, but was returned to custody when his bail hearing was postponed until Tuesday afternoon.

Police arrested Heale near the community of St. Jude's on Friday afternoon after they received a complaint of someone driving an SUV "all over the road."

Heale was subsequently charged with driving while impaired by a drug, plus four additional charges of violating bail conditions.

This is far from Heale's first brush with the law. He's currently on trial in St. John's, accused of assaulting his former girlfriend.

While she admitted stabbing Heale in the arm before the alleged assault, she testified she was afraid he was high on cocaine and was going to take their infant son.

Heale was also previously charged but found not guilty in two assault cases. He was cleared of allegations that he assaulted two women with a baseball bat in 2011, and also charges of assaulting a man outside a St. John's bar in 2009.

Heale's criminal record dates back to 1996 and includes 31 convictions.
