The mayor of Glenwood is disappointed by the news that a nearby mine is closing.

Mayor Darren Bursey said the Beaver Brook antimony mine will shut indefinitely in January, with most of the 104 workers to be laid off.

The Chinese-based owners said the quality of ore has dropped and it needs to do more exploration to find a better grade.

Bursey said he is trying to stay positive.

"They did indicate they would continue to explore so hopefully they will find the quality of ore they need and it will open," Bursey said.

"But to the best of my knowledge, unless they come up with economic feasibility, I don't see it opening."

About 10 workers will be kept on to look after maintenance, security and further exploration.
