A driver who acted up after being stopped for impaired driving early Wednesday morning now faces numerous charges, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said.

The man, 43, was pulled over near Columbus Drive after the RNC received a tip from a witness in downtown St. John's, who reported seeing a drunk driver heading west.

But when police took the suspect to the RNC station in nearby Mount Pearl for a breathalyzer test, the man put up a struggle.

The RNC said the man tried to disarm one of the officers, but did not succeed.

After that, police took the man to the St. John's lockup, where he is accused of assaulting a corrections officer and damaging property.

The man is expected to appear in provincial court on Wednesday.
