Women are being urged to watch their backs — and their drinks — after a warning from police in St. John's Thursday.

The RNC says sexual assaults linked to date-rape drugs being slipped into drinks are on the rise in the downtown.

Linda Ross, president of the Provincial Advisory Council on the Status of Women, offered some tips on how to safely enjoy a night on the town.

Ross suggests going out with a friend or in a group, and said the best plan is to avoid drinking alcohol alone. Another option is to avoid alcoholic drinks altogether.

But if you do plan to have a few drinks, she recommends bringing someone you trust to watch your back, and never leaving your drink unattended.

"Try to ensure that you've got at least one person in your group who's gonna be the designated individual to try to keep an eye out," said Ross.

Meanwhile, some recent night-time attacks have her going further, advising women not to walk the streets alone at night.

"As much as possible do not walk or go anywhere by yourself when it's dark," said Ross.

"It's unfortunate that we have that downside, but I think the important thing is to always be aware of the precautions that you can take to avoid having something happen."

Police are trying to crack down on the problem. The RNC said it has pinpointed persons of interest related to the complaints.

However, police said the fact that date-rape drugs impair memory of events makes the investigation challenging.
