The company responsible for shipping just about everything to the island of Newfoundland revealed the shape of its future yesterday — a supership that Oceanex will add to its current fleet of three.

"We're very anxiously watching," said Sid Hynes, Oceanex's executive chair.

He's not just speaking metaphorically.

The German shipyard Flensburger is building his dream ship twice — once in real space, and once in cyberspace.

That's where Hynes and his people have been watching it grow since the first stainless steel plate was officially cut last week.

"It was nice and fulfilling after, I guess, three or four years of planning," said Hynes.

It's not the kind of ship you can just buy off the shelf.

"We have a need to carry a lot of containers on the weather deck quite high up," explained Hynes.

The supership will be extra-wide, with a water deck load capacity five times the normal.

Flensburger ships are considered the Rolls Royce’s of the shipbuilding industry.

Hynes is paying more than $100 million for his baby.

He admits he could have got it cheaper somewhere else, but since he plans to have it for at least the next 30 years, he believes this kind of investment is for the better rather than the worse.
