Former Newfoundland and Labrador premier Danny Williams has dropped litigation against the Sierra Club of Canada and an environmentalist, but still plans to sue political blogger Brad Cabana.

Williams and the mining company Alderon Iron Ore Corp. had claimed that environmentalist Bruno Marcocchio made defamatory statements on an open line radio show about the Muskrat Falls hydro project.

Williams is a director on the board of Quebec-based Alderon. It is developing an iron ore mine in western Labrador and supports the Muskrat Falls project.

Both the Sierra Club and Marcocchio have apologized in writing. [Read the apology here.]

In the apology, they apologized and retracted comments that included an allegation that Newfoundland and Labrador "knowingly" entered into the Muskrat Falls deal because Williams was appointed to Alderon's board, as well as for a comment that Alderon and Williams are "a bunch of corporate psychopaths … who stand to make millions by pulling this deal off."

The letter, signed by Sierra Club of Canada executive director John Bennett and Marcocchio, added, "To be clear, neither [of us] have any reason to believe that Alderon or Mr. Williams are connected to the financing of the Muskrat Falls Project or stand to profit from it in any way, shape or form."

Williams and Alderon are still suing Cabana — who made unsuccessful bids for the leadership of both the Progressive Conservative and Liberal parties in Newfoundland and Labrador — for comments he made on the same radio program as well as in his blog.

Cabana has filed a countersuit against Williams and Alderon, arguing that "most, if not all, of the facts that were put forward" were true.
