A St. John's courtroom heard the details Wednesday of a gruesome attack that has resulted in a man being convicted of domestic assault.

The incident occurred in September 2011 when Anthony Antle, 50 was living with his then-girlfriend in Conception Bay South.

She had previously testified she thought she might die that night.

She said Antle who had been drinking, was acting weird, got angry, and was yelling at her.

She said she went to lie down on her bed, when Antle came in, hit her, and ripped her shirt. She said he then pulled her pants off, and dragged her by her hair down the hall.

After a struggle, she wrestled her way free, and got dressed to leave. Antle then grabbed her and threatened to throw her down over the stairs.

She said he put his arm around her neck and choked her.

At one point, he also put a knife to her face and neck, and said no one would want her when he was finished with her.

She said eventually his rage subsided, and he went to bed. She then left the apartment and slept in her car that night.

Judge Pamela Goulding said the woman's story was credible and trustworthy. She said it was corroborated by a tenant downstairs, who heard the commotion and things being thrown around. The neighbour said the episode could have lasted for as long as three hours.

Antle had testified in the case that his girlfriend had slipped. He said there was a slight disturbance, and that their argument only lasted for about 45 minutes.

But Goulding said that didn't line up with the tenant's story, the girlfriend's bruises or her ripped top.

She also didn't find Antle credible because he had testified he didn't clean up the apartment after the assault. Yet when police arrived on the scene the next day, there was no sign of a struggle, despite what the tenant had heard.

Goulding convicted Antle of assault, assault with a weapon, forcible confinement, and uttering threats.

He will be sentenced next month.
