A Bell Island woman said her family had an extra reason to celebrate this weekend, as RCMP arrested two men believed to have caused hit and runs this summer.
"We couldn't have a better Thanksgiving, 'cause I got my Dad, I got my daughter and they got the ones that done it," said Christine Byrne, reacting to news that police have charged men over a collision that sent her 14-year-old daughter, Kerri-Lynn, to hospital.
By coincidence, Byrne's father had been in hospital that day when her daughter was wheeled in.
RCMP had been looking for the suspects since Aug. 19, when two incidents were reported on Bell Island.
A 42-year-old man has been charged with failing to remain at the scene of an accident, impaired driving causing bodily harm, impaired operation of a vehicle and driving without valid insurance.
Another man, 19, has been charged with obstructing a police officer and operation of a vehicle without valid insurance.
Police said other charges may be laid.
Kerri-Lynn Byrne was walking along Ten Commandments Road when she was struck from behind with enough force to drive her about four or five metres into a nearby ditch.
"She was left there," her mother said. "They could have had the decency to stop to give her medical help if she needed it."
Kerri-Lynn's foot was crushed and may be damaged permanently.
