Vale says its new nickel plant in Long Harbour will begin production by the end of next year.
But it will test-drive the refinery using ore from Indonesia, not Voisey's Bay.
The new refinery is expected to begin production by the end of next year. (CBC)"It has less impurities," said Don Stevens, who is general manager of operations. "We believe we can feed that into the process, get it through the process in a fast manner and get nickel production by the end of next year."
The processing of ore from Voisey's Bay is expected to begin in 2014.
Ultimately, Vale hopes to process ore from all over the world at Long Harbour.
