One of Newfoundland and Labrador's oldest people turned 106 on Thursday, crediting a lifestyle that includes prayer and the occasional sip of gin.

Cecil Greenland celebrated his birthday with friends and family at his home in Spaniard's Bay.

"A hundred and six," mused Greenland. "Whoever would believe it?"

Greenland has packed quite a bit into almost 11 decades. He's outlived three wives, and experienced several vocations, including those as a teacher, fisherman, heavy equipment operator and carpenter.

So what's his secret to such a long life?

"Live right," said Greenland. "Say your prayers morning and night. That helps a lot."

Cecil lives with his daughter Linda Holmes.

"Most times like he usually goes out in the shed, puttering around," said Holmes. "I'd say puttering around making little knick-knacks. He'll come in then and have a little snooze and have a little drink."

Others relatives joined them for the special occasion, surrounding him in the living room of the house he built.

"If we give him love, we will keep him alive," said his young great-grandson Isaac Wilson.

Greenland enjoyed a celebratory glass of gin and lime, his face beaming as his family sang Happy Birthday.
