A ploy to give fake information to the police failed for a man in St. John's, with police not only putting him in the lockup but taking away his vehicle, too.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said when officers stopped a vehicle in the central area of St. John's on Tuesday, the driver "provided false information" to police, the force said in a statement.

The story didn't pan out, however, and the man, 28, was charged with mischief.

On top of that, he was also charged with several counts of breaching the Highway Traffic Act as well as breaching court orders.

The suspect already has traffic fines of more than $20,000 on the books.

His vehicle was also impounded.
