A convention catered towards fans of science fiction, fantasy and comic books is in Corner Brook this weekend.
Atlantic-Con is putting on films, displays, guest speakers, and a video game jam. Two actors from Star Wars will meet and greet as well.
Organizers are encouraging fans to dress up and show the love for the genre and are hoping to attract fans of all ages.
"There's enough of a community here, a fan community here in Corner Brook and the west coast to put off a convention like this," said Atlantic-Con executive director, Jeff Keeping.
He said what was once considered a genre that only appealed to so-called geeks, comic book heroes and fantasy freaks has become cool and popular.
"What was considered geeky 10 or 15 years ago isn't geeky anymore."
"It's mainstream thanks to stuff like the Big Bang Theory, and big movies like the X-Men movies, Spiderman movies, the Avengers, Iron Man."
There is also a charity auction being held with proceeds going to CC Loughlin school lunch program in Corner Brook.
"We've got lots of items going up on the block, we actually have some set pieces from Stargate Atlantis, which is very cool," said keeping on some of the items up for grabs at the auction.
Organizer Matthew Connolly said putting on an event like this one requires lots of muscle and man-power. 17 vehicles full of stuff will be on display.
"I tell you its not something two people can do we have a team of people behind us that help us out, we have volunteers in St. John's that have been guiding us with the rules and regulations, Hali-Con's been a big help with literature and information," he said.
Atlantic-Con marks a continuation of sorts for the comic convention. A West Coast Con came to Corner Brook in 2009 and 2010.
