The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has yanked the operating licence of XL Foods, the Alberta meat processing plant that has been connected to a series of recalls associated with possible E. coli contamination.

The federal agency made the announcement late Thursday, raising new questions for consumers about the safety of the food they buy and consume.

XL Foods has expanded its voluntary recalls of meat produced on five separate days between Aug. 24 and Sept. 4.
