A car chase that started in Bay Bulls and made its way to the Goulds turned violent for members of both the RCMP and RNC Saturday.

It all started when an RCMP officer from the Ferryland detachment attempted to stop a vehicle in Bay Bulls around 1:45 p.m., but the driver took off. Police followed the vehicle on the Southern Shore Highway until the driver eventually pulled into a driveway in the Goulds.

At that time, the male driver was placed in the rear of the RCMP cruiser, but his female passenger became combative with the police officer, and tried to help the driver escape.

While the RCMP officer tried to subdue the woman, the man kicked the window out of the patrol car, slightly injuring the police officer.

A retired RCMP officer stopped to provide assistance during the altercation.

RNC dispatched

The RNC arrived on the scene after receiving a call for assistance from the RCMP at 2 p.m. and helped control the situation.

The female passenger continued to struggle for some time before police secured both suspects. During this time a member of RNC was also assaulted. The pair were eventually taken to the lock-up in St. John's.

The man , 48, from the Goulds and the woman, 27 , from St. John's are facing numerous charges including impaired driving, flight from police, uttering threats, resisting arrest, property damage and assaulting a police officer.

The injured RCMP officer suffered minor injuries as a result of the incident, and was treated, and released from hospital.
