St. John's city councillors have rejected a plan to tear down the former Breakwater Books building.

The vote was held at Monday's council meeting.

Deputy Mayor Shannie Duff said before the vote that city staff have done an inspection and found that the building — located at 100 Water St. — is in good shape.

They recommended that councillors reject the request for a demolition permit.

Duff said the heritage building shouldn't be lost.

"The real thing about it is that it is almost pristine, in the fact that none of its features, interior or exterior, have been altered over the 117 years of its history," Duff said.

"So it is a really important example of that type of architecture, which was very typical in the city at that time."

Duff said the building has been vacant for a couple of years.

She said while the city can't force the owner to rent it out, she's hoping he will work with the city to preserve the building.
