Newfoundland hockey star Teddy Purcell warns a lockout in the NHL could be imminent.
The St. John's-born player was supposed to be in Tampa Bay by now, training for the new season. Instead, he's heading to New York this week for negotiation meetings.
Talks between the National Hockey League and the Players' Association broke off on Friday. The league plans to lock out the players if a deal isn't reached by Sept. 15.
Purcell says losing a season would hurt players in different ways.
"I don't think it’s good for anybody — older guys who only have a couple of years left, they don't want to miss a year, and younger guys like me, who are just starting to establish themselves in the league," said Purcell.
"As a player, you want to take the next step in your career, and a year off would hinder that."
Purcell and other NHL athletes are considering playing in Europe if the season is cancelled.
