Operations on the Henry Goodrich drill rig have been suspended after an incident the offshore regulator is calling a “near miss.”

An object was dropped on the rig at around 3 p.m. Thursday, according to the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board.

Husky Energy said it was a hydraulic cylinder — part of the equipment that handles the drill string on the rig floor.

No one on board was injured, but Husky says it is taking action to ensure something similar doesn't happen again.

“Husky takes safety very seriously and suspended operations on the rig immediately,” spokeswoman Aimee Sheppard said in an e-mailed statement.

Husky is currently conducting a probe of the incident.

“There was no release to the environment and the integrity of the well was not compromised,” Sheppard noted.

“The shutdown is a precautionary measure and will enable us to complete a thorough investigation of the incident.”

The C-NLOPB says operations will remain suspended until the regulator is satisfied that safety concerns on board have been addressed.
