A western Newfoundland woman has filed a complaint against the RCMP, claiming its members failed to ensure that charges were laid against a man she said was involved in assaulting her husband.

Carol Laney, of De Grau, on the Port au Port Peninsula, said three men came onto her property and attacked her husband with a baseball bat.

Two men from Red Brook were charged with assault with a weapon following the attack but Laney said a third man – who she claims forced her son to watch the beating – was not.

"I'm upset that the third man, that held my son and made him watch, is not even getting charged with trespassing, forcible confinement or assault or anything,” she said.

Laney wasn’t in the province when the incident happened more than two weeks ago but, based on what her husband has told her, she's filed an official complaint against three RCMP officers

"They have the nerve to tell me that I am just fishing for charges instead of seeking justice for my children. For me to have people come on to my property and assault my husband and make my child watch and they get away with it, it's not right," she said.

The RCMP said all the complaints are handled by the public complaints department and investigated.

The two men who were charged are scheduled to appear in court in October.
