A senior citizen who fell victim to heat stroke while walking a trail on Signal Hill in St. John's was safely rescued Monday.

The woman, who is in her 70s, became overwhelmed while she was walking on the popular trail that winds around the city landmark.

Firefighters hiked in with a stretcher and adapted it to a chair position in order to bring her out. The woman was given oxygen, and was then brought to a waiting ambulance. Officials said she will be fine.

Weather conditions were hot and sunny at the time.

Supt. Don Byrne said the incident should be a reminder that hikers should stay hydrated when they hit the trails.
