The mayor of Labrador City wants an urgent review of the province's rent control legislation.

Mayor Karen Oldford said Thursday the Residential Tenancies Act needs to be reviewed to curb the cost of renting.

"It needs to be done urgently, right now," said Oldford.

"We've said since 2007 we need rent control legislation. We need the act looked at in Newfoundland and Labrador."

She said hundreds of new homes and apartments have been built in the town since 2007, but the cost of renting is still too expensive for many working people. She added that a short construction season makes tackling the issue difficult.

Oldford said it's time her community got help, and she would like to see the government learn about renting legislation in other provinces to affect change in this province.

"We need to look at Ontario and BC and other provinces that have really good legislation."
