A western Newfoundland man was sentenced to prison Thursday for causing the death of a pedestrian in a January 2011 collision.

Morgan Taylor, 49, was behind the wheel of a car that killed Chris Farrell, 22, while he was walking along High Street in Port aux Basques.

Taylor was given a 26-month sentence, less 118 days served, during a hearing in provincial court in Port aux Basques. The Crown had been seeking a sentence of 30 months.

He has also been banned from driving for eight years.

Taylor, who had pleaded guilty earlier this year to dangerous driving causing death, was driving almost 100 km/h when his vehicle left the road and collided with Farrell, who was walking home from work.

Farrell was hit with such force that his body was sent flying in the air, bouncing first on the roof of Taylor's vehicle and then striking a large mobile sign.

A psychiatric assessment had shown that Taylor had been in the manic stage of bipolar disorder, but had not been sick enough at the time of the incident to avoid a trial.

A friend of Taylor's told CBC News last year that he had borrowed her car to get medication to treat his disorder.
