A lack of funding is putting the only camp that teaches Newfoundland and Labrador traditional music and dance to children in jeopardy.

The Vinland Music Camp, held each summer in Gros Morne National Park since 2001, used to receive funding from the province's Arts Council, but this year that funding went to other arts-related projects.

Now the operators of the camp have launched a fundraising campaign in the hopes of keeping the music playing.

Camp teacher Jean Hewson said they need $5,000 to keep the camp running.

“Basically this enables us to keep the costs down to the public,” said Hewson.

“It's not just about paying our own salaries. It's about making the camp accessible to the public and affordable.”

Hewson said so far they've been able to raise about $1,000.

She said the camp will go on this year, even if it means instructors taking a pay cut.
