The Eastern School District has reinstated one hour of secretarial time per day at 11 schools, reversing an earlier decision, although a reduction of services stands at two other schools.

According to acting CEO Bruce Vey, the move was made in consultation with school administrators.

“While Eastern School District was clearly acting within its right as the employer as per the collective agreement with CUPE 1560, we have decided to maintain the status quo at these 11 schools,” Vey said in an emailed statement.

“We believe that reinstating these 11 secretarial hours per day is the right decision to make for our schools.”

But two other schools will lose secretarial services provided in the past.

Those schools, whose enrolment has fallen below 600 students, will not get an allocation of 25 additional hours per week this year.

That means those two schools — St. Peter’s Junior High in Mount Pearl and Queen Elizabeth Regional High School in Foxtrap — will lose their second secretaries.

Eastern School District announced its original plan to reduce the hours last month.

Secretaries — and their union, CUPE — vowed to fight the cuts.
