Police in St. John's have charged a motorcycle driver and seized his bike after clocking him at more than 200 kilometres an hour.

An officer spotted him on radar early Friday morning doing 219 kilometres an hour on Pitts Memorial Drive. That's more than double the posted speed limit.

The officer radioed ahead and other Royal Newfoundland Constabulary cars caught him when he finally stopped at a red light on New Gower Street.

The driver was charged with impaired driving.

The 33-year-old also owes $19,000 in fines, but he was paying those off under a court-approved plan.
