DFO closes dozens of Newfoundland salmon rivers
Low water levels and warm conditions lead to action

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans has closed about 65 salmon rivers in Newfoundland because the water is too low and too warm.
Under those conditions, salmon tend to stay still rather than move upstream to spawn.
DFO said closing the rivers will help ensure more fish make it upriver when conditions improve.
“We're closing these rivers to protect our salmon so we can ensure that they safely migrate,” said Erin Dunn, DFO’s area resource manager for recreational fisheries.
“We're going to remove any angling stresses from the river.”
DFO says it will reopen rivers when conditions improve.
