A man, 30, was held in custody overnight after a traffic stop in St. John’s uncovered $37,000 in outstanding fines, police said Wednesday.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary conducted the traffic stop in the Mayor Avenue area after an officer recognized the driver, who had a suspended licence.

The man was charged with several breaches of the Highway Traffic Act.

When police discovered his how much he owed in outstanding fines, they impounded the vehicle.

The man is expected to appear in court Wednesday morning.
