One moment Craig Mayo was walking down the driveway to a track in cabin country, and the next he was on the ground bloodied and unconscious.

The St. John's man is still recovering after a Canada Day hit and run in Mahers.

Days later, he still doesn’t know what hit him.

Now he's wondering what will come first: his memory of what happened, or an arrest.

“The only thing I can figure out is at the end of the driveway — a trike or a quad or some vehicle like that had come up and sideswiped me," Mayo said.

The area is known for speeding ATVs.

The left side of Mayo’s face was left bruised and swollen. Stitches hold his forehead together. And tire marks run up his leg.

But he says the incident could have been even worse.

"It could have been a child,” Mayo said. “Sure, my injuries are bad, but with a small child it could have been devastating."

The RCMP says it doesn’t know who is responsible.

Local cabin owners are meeting this weekend to discuss what happened — and what could be done to prevent it from happening again.
