People who live near the site of a fatal pedestrian-vehicle accident in St. John's are calling on the city to install a crosswalk in the area.

A week ago, Erin Bursey, 21, died after being struck by a minivan on Thorburn Road.

On Monday, residents stood in the middle of the busy, five-lane road with protest signs.

Gert Holwell said there have been many accidents in the area over the years, and she hoped Bursey's death would convince the city to act.

“Now we have another person killed,” Holwell told CBC News. “None of us know this lady but we feel for her and her family, and tomorrow it could be one of us, or someone belonging to us. It's time for the city to step in.”

June Sharpe said it's a dangerous stretch of road.

“There have been several more accidents here,” she said. “Something needs to be done about this.”

The residents said they planned to be persistent. They said they'll protest on Thorburn Road every day until a crosswalk is installed.

And they also are putting together a petition to present to St. John's city council.

Bursey — who was captain of Memorial University’s varsity volleyball team — was laid to rest over the weekend.
