Herder finals may head back to home ice

Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador (HNL) is reconsidering a controversial decision on where the finals for senior men's hockey will be played.
HNL ignited a controversy last season when it insisted that the Herder Memorial Trophy finals be played in St. John's and Corner Brook.
But in a statement, the province's governing hockey body signalled that a change is in the works.
"Since all teams requested the right to choose where they play home games in the Herder, the senior council executive for Hockey NL will make changes in the Herder set-up for next year," HNL said in a statement.
The changes will be nailed down at a Sept. 15 meeting in Grand Falls-Windsor.
Many fans complained that HNL was putting ticket sales ahead of local communities by insisting that the Herder championships be alternated between St. John's and Corner Brook, regardless of which teams made the finals.
Meanwhile, HNL confirmed the Gander Flyers are returning to the senior league, bringing the number of teams to six.
As well, teams competing in the Avalon East Senior Hockey League have been reclassified as category A teams, which means they, too, can play for the Herder. That includes a new team from Bay Roberts for next season.
