Hep C needle attacker gets 30 months in prison

Darrell Phelan, 31, of St. John's, has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for stabbing his ex-girlfriend with a hepatitis C-contaminated bloody syringe.
Judge Wayne Dymond handed down Phelan's sentence on Friday morning in Newfoundland and Labrador Supreme Court.
Dymond said he hopes the sentence will be a jolt of reality for Phelan, who tried to infect his ex-girlfriend with his own hep C-tainted blood.
Phelan has been in custody since the incident occurred 16 months ago. He was given credit for time served, and has 14 months left. Phelan will be on three years probation after that.
