Two students in the Eastern School District are celebrating a special scholastic record - 13 years of perfect attendance.

In Mount Pearl, Daniel Kelloway celebrated his perfect attendance record Thursday with a limo ride to O'Donel High School. He hasn't missed a day in the classroom since kindergarten.

"During elementary it wasn't really that big a deal. But after that, I kind of got used to the fact ... It kind of became routine to just get up every morning and go to school," said Kelloway. "I didn't really think of it".

But about 10 years ago, Daniel did start thinking about it. His teacher at the time told him he was holding a perfect attendance record. Since then Daniel has been determined to keep it. He asked his mother if she would agree to give him $1000, if he graduated with a perfect attendance record.

"And I like the fool I said yes," said his mother Carol Ann Kelloway. "I didn't think he could do it."

"Well it is very rare," said Michelle Clemens, Principal of O'Donel High School.

"They've got to come all days, not miss an assembly, be here for all the Christmas concerts. To be here for the fun stuff as well as all the studious stuff," Clemons told CBC News. "This is the first one I've given out, and I've been in education for 25 years."

Brandon Hynes of Bell Island was another student celebrating his perfect attendance record on Thursday. Hynes was escorted by police to a party for his last day at St. Michael's High.

Thursday's graduation was a cherished moment for Hynes's family. Years ago the family lost their home in a fire. Brandon's brother Kyle was badly burned in the flames. The community came together and raised $55 000 for the family to buy a new home.

Hynes is the last of five children to graduate from school. He said he plans to become a steamfitter.
