The Newfoundland and Labrador government has reappointed Ed Ring to another two-year term as information and privacy commissioner.

Ring has held the job since late 2007.

The information and privacy commissioner is an independent officer of the house of assembly.

His office investigates and attempts to resolve complaints under provincial open-records and privacy laws.

Earlier this week, Ring defended Bill 29, the government’s sweeping series of changes to its access-to-information regime.

Ring said Monday that the legislation remains “robust.”

A wide range of groups — from the opposition to national journalism organizations to experts on international information laws — have denounced Bill 29, saying it allows politicians to further cloak their decisions in secrecy.
