Schools in some coastal Newfoundland communities closed for at least the morning on Thursday, as the island was pounded by a steady stream of freezing rain.

Environment Canada warned residents in eastern Newfoundland to prepare for rainfall amounts between 25 and 55 mm during the day and into Thursday night.

Schools on the Bonavista Peninsula and the Burin Peninsula were closed.

Police warned drivers to be cautious on highways and regional roads.

CBC reporter Cecil Haire said slippery driving conditions in the St. John's area were also compounded by poor visibility.
